For the past twenty four years Pauline has worked in the electrical distribution industry as a skilled tradesperson at Toronto Hydro. She began her career as a Labourer and after a few months entered into a 5 years apprenticeship program where she earned her Power Cable Journey Person Certification from the Municipal Electrical Association (MEA). For 2 years she expanded on her legal and communication capabilities in her role as Infrastructure Occupancy Rep., working with various Communication companies. Over the past 3 years she has incorporated the knowledge gained in the position of union leader to enhance her abilities and become an effective supervisor, emphasizing personal responsibility/accountability and the improvement of safe work practices of those under her stewardship.
Over twelve years Pauline Niles has been involved in a variety of non-for-profit organizations as a professional and volunteer. As the former elected President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local One (CUPE) from May 2006 to May 2008, she represented 1250 predominantly skilled trades-workers at Toronto Hydro. Pauline was the first woman and visible minority person to be elected president in the almost 100-year history of CUPE Local One. Versatile, with proven organisational, managerial and interpersonal skills, Pauline is also recognized as skilled negotiator who is well known for her abilities as a problem solver. Her experience includes working with senior leadership, specifically in the areas of Board development, governance and creating the marketing and implementation of strategic plans, establishing success in change and performance improvements.
